What The Insurance Company Doesn’t Want You To Know

You pay insurance premiums and expect your insurer to live up to its end of the deal when you file a claim. However, insurance companies are generally more concerned about protecting their bottom line than they are about paying you. For this reason, insurance companies often try to move things along quickly and rely on their own systems to minimize their payout. Insurance adjusters may be friendly and come across as very helpful, but it’s important to remember that they are employees of the insurance company and their objective is to pay you as little as possible.

At Gig Harbor Law, we are very familiar with the insurance company process and how they try to take advantage of you:

1. Insurance companies can save money by having your car declared a total loss.

In many cases, when your car is damaged it can be cheaper for the insurance company to pay the replacement value instead of the repairs to just fix the damage. This can be a terrible deal for you, as the replacement value might be considerably less than it would really take to repair your car.

2. Your car may be worth less after it is repaired.

After your car is repaired from a major accident, it is now considered a car that has been in a wreck and the value is thus diminished on resale. It’s also important to pay attention to who is repairing your car. Are they using dealer parts, off-brand, or salvage parts?

3. Your insurance claim could raise your insurance rates.

The insurance companies don’t release their internal calculations on how an accident, ticket, or any other claim can increase your premiums. This can deter people from making a claim, but it should not deter you, especially if you have injuries.

Other things that insurance companies won’t tell you:

  • You have the right to hire an attorney – and you should.
  • You do not have to provide them with a recorded statement without an attorney present.
  • You do not have to rely on the insurance company evaluation of your losses.
  • You should not post anything regarding your accident online.
  • The insurance company might ask you questions that they already know the answers to.
  • You can receive compensation for losses not related to economic loss.

Expert Point of View

“Our clients are often surprised to learn their case is worth significantly more than they originally thought. I’ve had many cases where a claims adjuster will tell a client that their case is worth very little, only for the client to discover after hiring us that they can settle for multiples of the original offer.”
